Welcome Everyone to the Pacific Gael Youth Pipe Band
It’s wonderful to let everyone know that the Pacific Gael Youth Pipe Band is up and running! We meet 6:30 Tuesday nights at the Royal Canadian Legion #256, 1630 Wellington Rd E.
Here’s what it’s all about:
The regular programming begins the second week of September and wraps up in mid- June, following the public school academic year and holidays. Students have a variety of options in how their program will take shape, depending on their experience and goals. Many come for private lessons, many for group work, some come once a week, and some, more than once a week. All regularly scheduled programs are goal driven, with the student and teacher being mutual partners in achieving excellence.
Goals of the Pacific Gael Youth Pipe Band
to inspire fun and excitement through music performance
to inspire a sense of accomplishment through learning achievements
to inspire belonging through performing and working with others
to inspire leadership through personal and group competitions
All of This for So Little
We offer a first-4-weeks free trial period. You can try it out because we can lend practice chanters and drum sticks with a small deposit.
Membership is $20 a month per family and includes one weekly group lesson. Payment can be made on the 1st Tuesday of the month – or yearly.
After the trial period students will need to buy their own chanters and drum equipment: practice chanters, $60-$75, depending on size; drum pads, $40; drum sticks, $25, and drummers need to buy a practice tutor for the band, $15.
Nanaimo’s very own Gord MacDonald at Island Bagpipe has everything you need for the pipe band experience. He can be reached at 250.585.6272. He’s in the Rutherford area, at 5775 Alder Way. www.islandbagpipe.com.

Yes, we have them!
We are fundraising to offer band scholarships to cover the cost of tuition and it is expected that students participate in one fundraiser per year.
Instruments, Uniforms, Expectations – The Inside Scoop
Drums are provided. Some bagpipes are available for long-term loan (3 years) after which students are expected to buy their own. Costs can be confirmed with Gord MacDonald but range anywhere from $900 to $1500, depending on brand, style, etc. Best to consult Gord about this.
Uniforms (see our website to see what they look like) are provided when students are ready. This is usually after a year but is dependent on the instructor’s recommendation.
Expectations are that students attend their classes and practices regularly and hold and demonstrate a commitment to learning.
It’s exciting to have this kind of opportunity for young people in Nanaimo. It fosters a sense of personal accomplishment, team work and respect for other cultural and musical styles. Be part of it!
